Academies of Birmingham
Academies of Birmingham are Birmingham City Schools’ innovative approach to preparing today’s students for career and college success. The mission of the Academies of Birmingham is to provide students with a safe learning environment that promotes intellectual growth and career exploration. Academy students are presented with a rigorous academic curriculum and provided access to business networks that will prepare them now to compete in a global economy.
Career-Technical Education
Career-technical education (CTE) students are fortunate to have the experience of major corporations and the leadership of highly qualified teachers available when developing their skills for college and their future careers. The Birmingham City School System's CTE programs develop the talents and skills of students in classroom settings that are rigorous, progressive, and certified to international standards.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is an academically challenging and balanced course of study that prepares students for success in college and life beyond. The mission of the program is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better, more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a competitive grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) to high-risk communities to develop comprehensive, research-driven programs to prepare low-income, minority, and first-generation students for higher education. GEAR UP students receive tutoring, mentoring, enhanced advisement from counselors, summer academic enrichment and financial education to learn how to pay for college.
The Gifted and Talented Education Program
The Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) is an enrichment program that provides support for gifted and high-ability learners. The GATE program seeks to provide exciting and engaging project and problem-based learning opportunities for students in the gifted program. Gifted education specialists are trained in building critical and creative thinking skills, addressing social-emotional needs of gifted learners, concept-based curriculum design, and differentiating instruction in the classroom. These individuals are able to provide resources for parents and classroom teachers who are seeking to challenge gifted and talented students.
Federal Programs
The Consolidated Federal Programs provides funding to 38 Title I public schools and 12 private/non-public schools located in the Birmingham City School System. Title I Part A funds are allocated to schools based on free and/or reduced lunch percentages received from the Birmingham City Schools Child Nutrition Department.
Grants
AmeriCorps VISTA is a federal service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 40 years.
Student Support Programs
Dropping out of high school does not have to be the end of your education. If you are age 17-21 and need to complete your high school diploma, call or visit our office to see if the Dropout Recovery Program is right for you. The Family Involvement Program's goal is to bridge the gap between school and home while extending the learning process for all children. The program meets this goal by conducting district-wide workshops and conferences for parents, adult family members, and significant others throughout the school year. These workshops provide information and resources, which enhance the knowledge base of parental involvement while giving parents the opportunity to participate in meaningful communication involving student academic achievement.

DECA
The mission of this organization is to enhance the co-curricular education of students with interests in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. The program includes competitive events, leadership activities, recognition programs and scholarships which are all intended to help develop the future leaders in marketing, management and entrepreneurship.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
The mission of FBLA is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. FBLA strive to prepare students for careers in business and business-related fields and helps create tomorrow's business leaders.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)
FCCLA promotes personal growth and leadership through family and consumer sciences education. Focusing on the multiple roles of a family member, wage earner and community leader, members develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge and vocational preparation.

Future Farmers of America (FFA)
Students who are members of FFA are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of young people by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA)
HOSA students are dedicated to promoting career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhancing the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA helps its members learn dedication, leadership and social skills; all of which are vital when dealing with people in the context of health care.

Skills USA
The central focus of the organization is to provide quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. There are seven major goals of this organization: professional development, community service, employment, ways and means, SkillsUSA Championships, public relations and social activities.

Technology Student Association (TSA)
Membership in the TSA prepares students for the challenges of a dynamic world by promoting technological literacy, leadership and problem solving, resulting in personal growth and opportunity. Students also have the opportunity to participate in local, state, regional and national competitions.
